This chapter provides a summary and critical assessment of rural planning and policy in the Global North, including the USA, Canada, the European Union, and Japan. Highlights include case studies of Ireland, Sweden, and Japan where rural population decline, together with the aging of those who remain in rural places, present significant hurdles in the provision of services.
