Green Up Your Space

Ever wonder how you can lessen your ecological footprint while here at USM? One way is to decrease or eliminate energy waste in our occupied and unoccupied spaces. Whether it's in your office, classroom, lab, apartment or residence hall room, there are quick, easy, and impactful ways to reduce your energy use.

Weekend & Break Shutdown Guide

Use the tips and tricks listed here to power down your space when you go away for vacations, holidays, or breaks! Some can be used each night or weekend, others are appropriate for longer periods of absence.

Guides to reducing energy waste during school breaks in:

Office

Offices & Lounges

  • Make sure all windows are closed and tightly latched
  • Make sure all exterior doors and loading dock doors are securely closed and latched
  • Clean out, unplug & defrost any refrigerator/freezers in the office
  • Unplug coffee makers, fans or other small appliances
  • Unplug any adapters or chargers including those for phone, laptop, speakers, battery chargers, and task lighting – these draw energy even when the product is not in use
  • Unplug calculators, projectors, desktop printers, TVs, digital signage monitors, paper shredders, label makers, pencil sharpeners, and other electronics
  • If you want to receive faxes during the break, DO NOT unplug the fax machine! Océ copier/printer/fax machines found in most USM offices can be set to sleep mode by using the 'Power' button on the right side of the touch display. While in sleep, the fax machine will still receive faxes which will be printed when the machine is woken up by a user.
  • After proper computer shut-down, unplug tower, monitor, and speakers of desktop machines. Unplug laptop docks.
  • To make all this easier: use a power strip with an on/off switch to switch everything on or off at once.
  • Take houseplants home
  • Turn off all lights (This should be done for shutdown but also whenever you leave a space for more than 15 minutes)

Laboratory

Classrooms & Labs

  • Make sure all exterior doors and loading dock doors are securely closed and latched

  • Unplug calculators, projectors, desktop printers, TVs, digital signage monitors, paper shredders, label makers, pencil sharpeners, and other electronics
  • Power down any non-essential lab equipment such as exhaust hoods
  • Check the condition of gaskets on any refrigerator or freezer to be sure equipment left on (only that equipment holding necessary items) is closed tightly
  • Unplug & defrost any non-esential refrigeration/freezing equipment
  • Be sure all faucets are securely off and not dripping
  • Turn off all lights (This should be done for shutdown but also whenever you leave a space for more than 15 minutes)
