The USM's School of Business Internship Program allows students at the graduate and bachelor's level the opportunity to apply classroom learning in area businesses for academic credit. The course is a cooperative, supervised work experience involving the student, employer, and a School of Business faculty sponsor. Interns work in a field that is aligned with their majors (or minors) in the School of Business.
What are Some Benefits of Internships?
- To provide an experiential learning opportunity in a professional setting where classroom learning can be applied, evaluated, and put in proper perspective.
- To increase student awareness of how they think, feel, and act in a professional setting and how others in that setting think, feel, and act toward them
- To improve students' work-related proficiencies such as written and interpersonal communication skills and resume preparation.
- To provide information and to develop networks that students can use to evaluate their preparation for full-time work, plan their careers, and obtain jobs upon graduation.
- To increase opportunities for faculty contact with organizations in the community and to increase these organizations' awareness of the School.
- To enable employers to identify and train prospective employees without having to make a formal commitment to full-time employment.
- To provide academic credit for students' Internship experience.
- To help defray education expenses.
- To develop students' confidence and professionalism.
Who is Eligible for the School of Business Internship Program?
The Internship Program requires students to be majoring or formally minoring in a business program. Bachelor's level students must have completed 53 credit hours and have junior standing; associate's level students must have completed 23 credit hours and sophomore status. All business administration majors need a minimum grade point average of 2.33. All accounting majors need a minimum grade point average of 2.5. All MBA/MSA students with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 are eligible for the Internship program. All students must check with their Business School advisors to determine eligibility.
What is the Internship Process for Students?
Interested students should meet with their student advisor to determine eligibility. Once the student has been found eligible and the internship process discussed, they need to make an appointment to visit the School of Business Internship Coordinator for further information. The Internship Program has some job listing in various fields. However, interest in the program does not guarantee placement with an employer, students must actively work with the co-ordinator and on their own. The University will assist in resume development, review and distribution to employers. Students are interviewed by prospective employers and then are assigned faculty advisors aligned with their choice of discipline i.e. marketing, finance, etc. Faculty members advise students on a Learning Contract (example) based on the job description provided by the employer.
Once the Learning Contract has been agreed upon by the student and faculty sponsor, the undergraduate student is registered in the three credit course by the School of Business Internship Coordinator, 123 Luther Bonney Hall. In the event the internship coordinator is unavailable the student may register in the School of Business Office, Room 113 Luther Bonney Hall. The internship courses availabe are BUS 395/396 (Bachelor's in Business Administration); BUS 397 (Bachelor's in Business Administration - Sport Management major); ACC 395/396 (Bachelor's in Accounting), ACC 695 (MSA); for the appropriate credit hours (usually three).
