Applying for Graduate Programs
INSTRUCTIONS FOR APPLICANTS
Complete the online graduate application and submit the following materials:
- Submit a brief essay (300-500 words) that expresses your interest in the program and how it will help you to achieve your professional goals, as well as relevant life and work experiences, role models, and educational and/or cultural experiences.
- Transcripts from all previously attended institutions. These must demonstrate completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a competitive GPA. A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or a “B” average is expected. If your cumulative GPA is not 3.0 or better, the likelihood of your acceptance is greatly diminished.
- A current resume
- Two letters of recommendation which speak to your character, work ethic/professionalism, and problem solving abilities and potential to be successful in a graduate program. Applicants will be asked to provide the name and email address for each reference when completing the application and the form will be sent directly to each recommender by the university. If sending additional letters, recommendations must be received either directly from the recommender or forwarded by the applicant in sealed envelopes with the recommender's signature over the seal.
Completion of the application requirements does not guarantee admission into the program. After submission of all application materials, applicants who meet program requirements may also be scheduled for an interview with faculty. Once accepted into the MLS program, students have six years from the date of first matriculation in which to complete the program.
If you are applying for financial aid, your financial aid form (FAFSA) should be mailed by February 1 to ensure the best possible financial aid package. Applicants should complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. (The University of Southern Maine’s Federal School Code is 009762.) Various scholarships are available. Contact Student Financial Aid directly with any questions or concerns.
